“You shall have no other gods before me.”
In a world that was full of pagan religions that worshipped multiple gods, this command stands out: you worship only one god. It’s not like your neighbours who worship 10 gods and a pick a favourite god to worship with more devotion than the rest… No, you must not worship YHWH as one of many, you have eyes for me only, there is no other.
Now, this command is not saying that there are no other gods, in fact there are many! Even in our day and age there are many gods who call for our attention and allegiance – money, popularity, sex, intimacy, etc. But among all the gods out their that are calling us and drawing us to worship them, we worship YHWH and YHWH alone. Jesus makes the point again in Luke 16:13
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
- Is Jesus at the centre of your life?
