10 Words to Live By… introduction

  • All of the OT law can be summarised in 10 commands…
  • And the 10 commands be summarised in just 2…

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’” (Matt. 22:37-40).

  • And those 2 commands can be summarised in 1 person – Jesus(Matt. 5:17-20).
Commands 1-4 focus on “love God” – that is, how we are to relate to God, and commands 6-10 focus on “Love neighbour” – how we are relate to each other.
Before we look at the 10 commands in turn, it’s worth reminding that these “words” are delivered in the context of a personal relationship with the God whom they have heard, been rescued by, and seen his power at work… It’s in the context of relationship and evidence.
Deuteronomy 5:1-6
Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today [Relationship]. The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain . (At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:
“I am the LORD [the personal name of God – YHWH “yah-way” is used here] your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. [Evidence]
